Unfortunately, his generic waving proved of no use to the siren, their features twisting up in further confusion as they glanced in the direction in which he had pointed. A pause, peering down at the map he pulled out, eyes wide at the brightly coloured images on the little black box. A soft hum paired with a warm smile—childlike wonder.
“That’s one of those boxes the humans like to point at things,” they murmured, touching a fingertip to the map delicately where he had indicated. “I did not know one could come from inside…” It would become rather apparent very quickly that Day had spent very little time out of captivity. Despite all of their time spent above water, they knew very little of earthen technology and human customs. They only knew what had been shown them. After that, they had been locked away for show.
“Me?” A slow shake of their head, smile fading again at the thought. How they missed home… “Far away from here. Deep in the twisting corals at the bottom of the ocean and beyond…The place where I come from cannot be pronounced out of water,” they admitted. They bit their lower lip tensely when he suddenly looked so sad. Emerald eyes fell to look at the glass of water still cradled between their hands on the table.
“I cannot speak of it.”
The words were more true than they could possibly explain. The pain of the memory made it hard to speak of, sure, but the deeper truth of the matter was that if they spoke of it they could be found that much easier. They were forbidden—cursed—to speak of that fateful day they were yanked from their home and sold into slavery for human entertainment.
They nodded when he explained his coat was in his bag, a bit of relief washing over them. They had feared perhaps it had been taken or lost, a fair explanation for his long life on the surface. However, as he explained further, they realized there were indeed worse possibilities.
“Torn,” they repeated softly. “That is terrible. Mayhaps I can have a look?” They had, in a previous life, fixed friends’ seal costs before, though usually they dabbled in minour repairs. They figured if he hadn’t managed to fix it yet they might not be able to do much, but maybe they knew someone who could. After all, the circus where they resided was full of all sorts of curious creatures, not to mention the boy that often helped them escape for fresh air and a chance to find a way home now and again.
Their shoulders went rigid briefly when asked if they “shifted.” Their head tilted to one side, considering the question carefully. A smile then slowly spread across their face. A finger dipped into the salty water in the glass again. They let their other arm rest, forearm up, on the table and took the freshly wet finger, sliding it across the length of their forearm. Emerald eyes shifted to beautiful, shimmering aqua, the skin that had been wet immediately soaking up the water. Turning their wrist this way and that, they revealed the faint, near-invisible see-through scales that shown under the warm lighting of the bar.
“Like this?”
"It's like. That way." Flynn points past the bar-- but, on second thought, he might be wrong. Pulling out his phone, Flynn pulls up the map. "Here," He points to the section of ocean he grew up in, the rocky coast they used to sun themselves on. Zooming the map out, so they could see more of the ocean, he pushes it towards her. "Where are you from?"
Looking up, he watches with interest the way they play with the glass of water. His smile falters, however, as she keeps talking. "You- don't know?" Oh, how his heart breaks for her. No wonder she'd been so quick to scoop him up and set him down somewhere they could talk. How long must it have been since they'd had the opportunity to speak with someone so similar to themselves?
"I'm sorry." He ducks his head. "Both that you've been here probably a while, and that it wasn't your choice. I can't imagine it's a nice story." Flynn's wasn't, after all, but at least he knew what it was and when it had happened.
At her question, he pats the backpack held closely to his side. "It's here - I don't go anywhere without it. But it's torn. That's why I've been here so long. I can't shift until it's fixed, and everything I've tried so far has failed." A pause, before a potentially sensitive question. "Do you shift? Sorry if that's rude."

Things ADEAN learned in college that might help a boi out:
-Look man if you're as shy and anxious as I am, making friends is gonna be hard af. But trust me when I say that you don't absolutely NEED a whole posse. Some people have that, but I got along just fine with a handful of acquaintances that I saw in class and at club meetings and two very good very close friends. You'll be okay without a whole squad unlike high school. - I am a lazy fuck but I am also a lazy fuck that enjoys learning so I retain shit and do things on my own time. Did I always go to class? No. Did I buy or read all of my books? Definitely not. Did I buy every single supply listed on the syllabus? Nah son art shit is expensive. Moral of the story is that you can scrape by without every single thing. Wait a week or so and be sure of what exactly you are going to need before you buy it. I never bought my Ancient Greece textbooks and passed the class with a C (a juniour level class as a freshman) but I did buy my $300 art history textbook that I never read. -You can miss class, but not too much!! A couple days max, check with your prof if you have any type of problems with time and such and more often than not they will understand. I had two classes fifteen minutes apart that took place on opposite ends of a campus on a big ass hill. I let my professor know about it and he gave me leeway regarding tardiness bc there was no way my fat ass was getting from mass to cherry in fifteen minutes. -Meal plans are fuckin expensive but a lot of schools require them if you live on campus. Make sure you make the most of them -Don't be like me kids. Do your assignments in advance of when they are due to make your best work. However if you do decide to be like me and don't care to do your best because #DsGetDegrees you can make it by doing all of your assignments the night before. It's just really not recommended. -Talk to your professors they're cool people. My fave profs are in the history department, which is my minour, and one of them is actually helping with my majour next semester (sorta). She has a cool fashion sense and I'm gonna document it as a sort of project. I wouldn't have been able to set this up if I hadn't garnered a friendship with her. -Support other departments (especially the arts) okay I may be biased but really! Go to plays, art exhibits, foreign language events, etc. a lot of times you can get extra credit for classes and even if you doing they are very fun experiences. Showing appreciation for these mediums encourages people who are in those fields to continue doing what they love and the support also shows the uni that what thy are doing is worth support. -pick up a hobby. There are tons of clubs on every campus and an avid social life, plus most campuses have rec centers and gyms. Just find what you like and do it. It helps you make new friends and branch out to other parts of college life as usual. -free stuff. There is almost always some sort of opportunity to get some free food, candy, nonedibles, etc and I highly recommend you take every opportunity to grab that shit n go - bikes and busses. If you have a large campus or a campus that's placed on an obnoxiously big ass hill like mine, you might want to either invest in a bike or figure out the bus routes. They usually aren't too tough to crack but they do take some getting used to (I caught the wrong line and went downtown instead of to my class at cherry). Plus they are good for getting around town if you don't have a car (or your license like me) Okay this one is specifically for open campuses: My school is an open campus, meaning anyone can just walk around anywhere whenever they want and do anything they want(as long as it's not illegal of course). This of course means that we have radical preaching people (the bad christians not the good ones u know what I mean), people setting up gory "abortion pictures" in the middle of campus right near all of the food places (true story), and a hot mess of other stuff. Eventually you get used to it or at the very least try to avoid it. I'm ngl I'm still trying to figure out how to handle this bc I have this crippling fear of school shootings, so it might be a good idea to figure out your school's policy on who can and can't show up on campus
